There are nearly a half million people in the San Diego area who may rely on food donations. These people live at or below the federal guidelines indicating poverty and struggle with having enough food to eat each day. Many of these people are young children or senior citizens, some of the population who may not be able to obtain food or resources on their own.

People in this area have this issue called to their attention during the holidays but the fact is that the need is great all year long. It is estimated that 70% of the population in need consists of families with children. Some of the children get nutritional support from school lunch programs but may not be assured of having food on the weekends.

Many businesses have different types of food fundraisers throughout the year. They may take the form of fashion shows, golf tournaments, or food drives. They may sponsor concerts or help support restaurants that have events. They may ask employees to donate or ask their clients. High schools in the area have competitions at least once a year to get students involved in getting food donations for the various food pantries in the area.

The food donations are also collected from other sources. Stores that sell f
ood many times many donations as do the manufacturers. Volunteers also obtain food that is near its expiration date but still good. They may also get donations of fruits and vegetables or other foods that have a limited shelf life. Donations may come in the form of surplus items from stores, overstocked items or other types of items.

There are different programs targeted at different groups. One program helps children to obtain food to take home over the weekend by the use of filling up backpacks. Seniors over 60 years of age who meet the program requirements for income can receive assistance. There are ten locations countywide that distribute food to people once a month. There are programs for mothers with young children.

Non profit organizations also work with the food banks programs. Groups that provide food or feed people in need can obtain donations of food. There is also a plan in place that works with people in need at fairs that also promote many types of different services such as health care.

In addition to donations of food and cash, these organizations welcome volunteers. They provide all the training needed. They only require a small commitment of time each month but are grateful when people can donate more hours. Organizations that accept food donations can always use many different types of help.
