People need to help feed the hungry all year long. While many have a heightened awareness of this problem during the winter holiday season, they may not realize it is something that San Diego charity organizations do all year long. With almost 500,000 people in the area in need at all times, there are many different options for people who would like to help with this worthy cause.
People are always welcome to donate food directly or donate money to organizations that work to build food pantries and other donation sources. There are many opportunities to help in this manner and people can support the organization of their choosing. They may not realize that there is a need for volunteers in many of the different aspects of this food chain. They can assist whether they are rich or poor themselves and provide as many hours of support as they would like to give.
There are many different programs of this type to choose from. In addition to packaging food to go out to families, seniors and others in need, many volunteers work to obtain the food. Volunteers may work to help families and others fil
l out applications if they are applying for specific programs as well as advocate for them along the way. They can also assist people in finding the program that best suits them.
Volunteers also help obtain the food that makes up these programs. Some of them obtain food from grocery stores that may be coming close to expiration dates. This food is good and needs to be handled quickly so that people are able to make use of it. Grocers and other types of stores frequently are able to donate food that has absolutely nothing wrong with it but that they are unable to sell. This can be something they are discontinuing selling or it can be as simple as a tiny piece of the label was damaged in transit. These factors may make the product unappealing to the general public but makes it useful to those in need.
People can also work at the events that various groups have throughout the year. There are always people needed who can help run these events and people can pick the types that they like the best. These can include fashion shows, sporting events, food drives at businesses and restaurants, and other types of events. People can find many opportunities to help feed the hungry all year long.
