There's nothing like the smell of coffee in the morning. It's one of the first things most people do when they get up in the morning: turn on the coffee brewer. And there's nothing like taking that first, delicious sip. It wakes you up, makes you feel happy, and gets you ready to face a brand new day. But do you know where your coffee comes from?
Most people know that coffee comes from ground and roasted beans, but what most people don't know, is that coffee is actually the seed of a fruit: the coffee cherry. Coffee trees bear fruit that are first green, then into yellow, and then red as it ripens. Coffee cherries are harvested from the coffee tree. Most of the time, these cherries are handpicked. The flesh from the coffee cherries are removed and then the seed is washed and dried to remove any leftover flesh. The seeds or beans are dried in the sun or in large drying machines. The beans are then roasted after which they can be ground and brewed into a cup of coffee.
Almost half the coffee in the world comes from South America. Coffee trees thrive in very mild climates where the tem
peratures don't rise or drop too much. They need to be planted at high elevations. Generally, coffee trees need to be grown in climates where the temperatures range between 15 to 24 degrees Centigrade and with approximately 60 inches of rainfall annually. They also need to be grown and planted 2,000 to 6,000 feet above sea level. The Arabica coffee, which is the most popular type of coffee in the world, is best grown in these conditions. The Robusta coffee bean is best grown in places where the temperatures range between 24 to 30 degrees with the same amount of rainfall and elevation.
Coffee is the most popular beverage in the world. And with the recent explosion in coffee consumption, cafes are more popular than ever. Each coffee manufacturer has master roasters that create the special blends of coffee that they produce. The different coffee companies in the world use a mixture of different beans from different locations all over the world. They also use special processes and roast the beans for a specific amount of time in order to achieve the unique coffee flavor their known for. All this combined with the right cafe equipment results in the smooth, delicious cup of coffee you love.
