Oftentimes the names of popular cocktails are a bit strange. The Bloody Mary doesn't sounds like a murder, Sex on the Beach sounds like a naughty roll in the sand, and any of the popular "bomb" drinks/shots sound like a call to arms. Although this really isn't important, and rarely reflects the taste or ingredients, the names of cocktails, more often than not, don't have anything to do with the actual drink. There are exceptions to this rule however, and the Blue Lagoon is a great example.
A Blue Lagoon is a tasty, fruity, and smooth drink that is perfect for sipping in the sun - or better yet, in an actual lagoon. The drink is basically a variation of the popular drink of Malibu rum and pineapple juice. The Malibu and pineapple is a great drink on it's own, but with a tiny bit of tweaking with blue curacao it becomes even more tropical. The simple addition of this liquor not only adds a punch of flavor, but also makes the drink appealing to the eyes. A great drink that will make an impression on more than it's taste, but presentation also -assuming it has been made correctly, of course.
The recipe for making yourself the perfect Blue Lagoon is: Malibu rum, pineapple juice, blue curacao, ice cubes
Ratio of ingredients - 1 oz. Malibu rum, 1/2 oz. blue curacao, and a splash of pineapple juice, more or less to suite your preferences.
To make a Blue Lagoon, make sure to use a highball or Collins glass. From there, fill the glass with however much ice you prefer - the more the better for this drink, as it can quickly melt if outside in the sun, the perfect place for such a drink - and then add 1 oz. (30 ml.) of Malibu rum. Next, add a splash of fresh pineapple juice - the fresher the better.
Concentrate juice will work, but having a fresh pineapple not only makes it taste better, but a pineapple wedge along the rim of the glass makes a great, attractive garnish. Finally, 1/2 oz. (15 ml) of blue curacao is poured, very gently, atop the Malibu and pineapple to create a floater of blue liquid at the top. The floater technique may take some practice, but really makes the drink stand out visually when performed properly.
This is done by pouring the blue curacao over a bar spoon's convex end so it slowly enters the drink without mixing directly into the rum and pineapple juice - when done properly, the blue liquid should be layered separate from the bottom. The last step is adding a pineapple wedge, umbrella, or any other garnish of your choice. Now the drink is ready to be enjoyed. Cheers!
