The greatest Indian influence in the United Kingdom is all about the proliferation of this South Asian's food into the collective consciousness of Britons. Even government, such as Foreign Secretary Robin Cook in 2001 recognized that chicken tikka masala as the true national dish of Britain. Now, there are many Indian restaurants in London and the best ones are listed below.

Hot Stuff. Opened by the Dawood family in 1988, it is located on a side street in Lambeth. It is literally a hole in the wall with only two rows of plastic tables and chairs with the back area serving as the kitchen. Entering the restaurant though brings the diner to the backwoods of India where the air is thick with cumin and garam masala scent. The menu is down home style Indian cooking with appetizers of tamarind, tomato and lime chutney with papadum. Starters range from king prawns in garlic and chili with tomato and onion sauce, jeera chicken wings in ginger and cumin with a side of tamarind and date sauce and soft potato with spinach bhajis. The house specialty is the lamb dopiaza, with thick peppercorns and sweet peppers. Another one is the kehrala chicken that oozes with ginger, coconut and curry leaves or the k
ing prawn masala where black tiger prawns are swimming in onion, tomato and coriander. This is truly one of the marvels of Indian cuisine in a small place right in London.

Amaya. This is a Michelin awardee specializing in Indian grill cuisine. Located in Sloaneland, between Knightsbridge and Belgravia, this restaurant creates an Indian dining experience, with food served similar to tapas, in small servings with preparations akin to ikebana. This is a chic Indian restaurant with mango lassi with mint as drinks. The food is all about grilling, from rock oysters flash grilled on a hot iron skillet and served with yellow coconut sauce. Next served was sweet corn and sweet potato kebabs that were fired in the clay tandoori oven. Fish tikka was then served cooked in fenugreek and leaf turmeric in the tandoori, King prawns in chili paste and grouper cooked on a charcoal grill wrapped in pandan leaves. This is truly an aromatic delight to the senses especially since most of the food have been grilled to perfection.

These are but two of the best Indian restaurants in London. Finding the right one suitable to your taste and budget is important to allow you to be brought to the exotic Indian sub continent without leaving the United Kingdom. A true delight right in the middle of London.
