Have you ever seen those lovely meringue frosted cakes at the baker's shop? Have you noticed how the meringue formed soft peaks and curls that were a lovely shade of toasted brown? These meringue iced cakes are actually quite unique and fun to enjoy, but you do not have to buy them from the bakery. Instead, you can make one at home. All you need is to bake the cake, create a meringue and then make use of one of the torch lighters that used butane. Many people do not realize just how simple it is to make one of these cakes. Here are the steps to take to create your own.
Start with the cake. Of course, you need to bake this as directed. Whether you choose to bake with a cake mix or bake a cake from scratch is up to you. You will want to choose a flavor cake that will go well with the meringue icing, like lemon or chocolate. Then, you will need to make a meringue. This includes using egg whites and sugar to create a stiff, white whipped batter that will form peaks and hold them.
It is not time to pick up the torch lighters yet. You n
eed to know how to properly frost and pull the meringue. As you frost the cake, work quickly and do not handle the meringue too much. The frosting does not have to be exact since you will be pulling it and you do not want the meringue to set up before you are done. After you are done frosting the cake, with clean hands, press your fingertips in the meringue and then gently pull away. Do this all over the cake to create all of those peaks and curls.
Make sure you choose from cigar lighters that will allow you to set them on medium. You could damage the meringue if you use too high of a setting. Then, hold the lighter so that the flame is just an inch or two from the meringue surface and pass the flame evenly and slowly. You will see that those peaks will start to turn brown. Be sure to keep the torch moving so that you do not scorch any one area of the cake. In the end, you should have an attractive and unique cake that everyone is sure to love.
There are many ways that you can use cigar lighters in the kitchen. They are especially useful for making desserts such as the pulled and torched meringue cake described above.
