Perfection, some people would say that it is impossible, but in fact it is not. All you need is the perfect combination of sweet, salt and apple.
Fun fact that you will probably forget: apples are 25 percent air, meaning they are not perfect. The reasoning there is a deductive inference, which requires you to infer that because the apple is 25 percent air it is also flawed.
Logically it makes sense from a philosophical stand point. However when you take philosophy into question nothing really makes sense.
So here is something everyone can agree on. Caramel apples are delicious, perhaps saying perfect is too far for some but others will gladly proclaim to the world of the caramel apple's perfection.
Alright there are some things you need to get before you can start making your gourmet dessert. Because this is a gourmet recipe it calls for nothing less than gourmet ingredients.
Gather five large Granny Smith apples, the green ones for those of you who do not remember learning the apple names back in second grade. The green that have that tart almost sour taste that is going to complement the smooth sticky caramel coating the edges.
You will also need one 14 ounce bag of caramels (preferably individually wrapped), two tablespoons of water, seven ounces of a chocolate candy bar, two tablespoons of shortening (divided) and lastly you will need one cup of some colored candy or peanuts if you like salty caramel apples. Now you are ready to get started.
Get a large pot of water and bring it to a boil, place the apples into the pot of water briefly to get the surface of the apple completely clean. Apples secrete a bit of wax and naturally dust is going to settle, so cleaning these off with some boiling water is going to be the quickest and most effective way.
Stab the apples with a stick through the core and place them on a cookie sheet with a wax paper. Now unwrap your caramels and place them in a microwave safe bowl along with the two tablespoons of water.
Microwave the caramel for one minute at a time, stirring between each minute of cooking. Be careful not to burn the caramel.
Dip the apples into the caramel and then place into the refrigerator until the caramel has settled. Now break the chocolate bar into little bits and place into a microwavable bowl along with the one tablespoon of shortening.
Microwave until it is liquid and dip the caramel apples into the chocolate. Garnish the apples with colored candies to make them have more of an aesthetic appeal, and if you want them to taste delicious then garnish them with salty peanuts.
