Gourmet food comes at a price, other than the monetary detriment. You have to basically be primped proper before you can start eating any gourmet food.

There is a lot to know when it comes to being fancy at a gourmet restaurant, most likely if you ever attend a fancy restaurant you will not care too much about etiquette, but if for some reason you really need to impress your guest then it would be helpful to know these rules of protocol. Most of the time you won't have to know where the dessert spoon goes in correlation to the main plate or when to use the salad fork and so own, that is, unless you are with the princess of England or something.

Now imagine you had a beef carpaccio, you would not want to start eating it with the salad fork, especially in front of Queen Sofia of Spain. Now beef carpaccio is a very thinly slice tenderloin, and with the parmesan cheese, black pepper, lemon juice, arugula, olive oil, and aged balsamic you may just want to eat this meal a slight bite at a time.

Do not do this, that little fork to the left of that slightly bigger fork is not for the carpaccio, it is for the salad that will come before the carpaccio. Now if your friends are going to set up a great meal like this for you and invite you over it is customary and proper to bring a gift.

Many people think flowers are nice, this is totally false. Flowers are not nice they create a hassle and a small fuss about finding a vase and then some place in the house you can put the flowers for a couple days, no, do not bring flowers.

What is appropriate would be a bottle of wine or a nice dessert. In the case of a beef carpaccio you may want to get a darker red wine to pair it with something like cabernet sauvignon, and in case you do not drink wine bring a nice dessert like a tiramisu.

Now presuming that your guests didn't disrupt the entire evening with flowers as a gift, you can effortlessly move the party into the dining area where you will all seat yourself in the appropriate manner. Women will be seated first, with the help of their accompaniment, then the male guests will sit and lastly the host will.

Start becoming educated in etiquette, you may start impressing some friends, or you may even be able to woo some foreign royalty if you are lucky. Etiquette is like the grammar of the dinner table, it is imperatively important but quickly dwindling from modern culture.
