There is no celebration or occasion that is complete without a cake. Decorated cakes are always part of special celebration such as a birthday, wedding, or anniversary. Creating an amazing cake is an art, and many people have made fortunes by having a creative talent and an eye for style.
When you are decorating cakes, it is important to learn basic cake decorating methods.
It starts from how to choose the right decorating bags (i.e. frosting bags), how to properly fill decorating bags, and the best way to hold decorating bags when preparing to decorate a cake etc.
Here are the basic tips to be considered while decorating a cake:
1. It is important that the frosting you are using for decorating is the right consistency. Boarders and drop flowers can have medium consistency frosting, roses and other flowers need a firmer frosting so the petals will hold their shape and frosting to be used for writing, leaves and simple line designs can be slightly thinner.
2. Powdered sugar must be completely free from lumps when it is to be used for a decorating frosting. If there are even small lumps it will be necessary to sift it.
3. Most designs are made by holding the decorating bags at 45 degree angle. For drop flowers, stars, dots and rosettes, hold the bag at 90 degree angle.
4. Before piping a design or a message on a cake, lightly outline the design with a wooden pick to use as a guide. Short strips of sewing thread can be lightly placed on the frosted cake to mark the position of the message.
5. Use steady pressure to press out the frosting. The amount of pressure will determine the size and evenness of any design. To finish a design, stop the pressure and lift the point up and away.
6. When adding food color, remember that frosting will darken slightly as it sets. For vivid or deeper food colors, use paste food colors.
7. A turntable or lazy Susan is a helpful tool to make it easier and faster to frost and decorate cakes.
Decorating bags are used for cake decorating include the reusable plastic- coated decorating bags or the disposable parchment paper or plastic bags. The plastic coated decorating bag can be used with or without a coupler. The coupler saves time by enabling you to change decorating tips while still using the same bag of frosting. A coupler is not used for large decorating tips.
