Restaurant owners continue to add measures to prevent the spread of illness at their locations.

A common place to see hand sanitizer dispensers is in the back of restaurants. However, as the sales of hand sanitizer dispensers continue to rise in 2010 expect to start seeing them in the front of restaurants and other locations. With the increase in demand, manufacturers are coming out with better looking dispensers for this purpose. Consumers and employees are putting a high priority on the sanitary conditions of the restaurants they frequent. Restaurant owners should explore the added benefits of installing dispensing units throughout their locations, instead of just in the back kitchen and bathroom area.

Restaurants require their employees to wash their hands after using the bathroom and many install the dispensers as an additional form of protection. It's important to understand that sanitizer cannot replace hand washing, but makes a great compliment when used correctly. If a restaurant employee or patron has food or dirt on their hands they should use the wash room. However, to kill up to 99.99% of germs depending on the make-up of the sanitizer they should follow up hand washing with hand sanitizing for best results. When a wash room is not in reach the sanitizer can be used instead.

Aside from sit-down restaurants, a fast food restaurant Chick-fil-A began offering packets of hand sanitizer at their drive through windows. A food safety manager Hal King said when referring to the drive through, "you can't wash your hands before you eat."

When it comes to the ideal sanitizer to use for restaurants and in other food applications, some non-alcohol sanitizer brands are preferred because their sanitizer kills bacteria that is food-borne and remains active for four hours even if the person washes their hands. Additionally, it does not come off during perspiration.

While hand sanitizer has many benefits its primary focus is to prevent the spread of illness. Therefore, it's even more critical to use before sitting down to eat because the chances of spreading illness when making hand to mouth contact significantly increases. Patrons of restaurants should make the restaurant owners aware of what they expect and improved protection for their employees and customers is gaining in priority.
