Cooking and catering has gripped the nation, everywhere you look there is references to cooking or catering. Whether it is on billboards, television or radio stations or in the bookstores where hundreds of different books by hundreds of different celebrity chefs adorn the shelves, the world of food follows us around.
One strange thing that I have noticed is that if you watch any of these celebrity television shows like Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen nightmares, the cookware utilised in the kitchen is generally worn and shows signs of use. The pans are sometimes burnt around the edges and showing signs of damage. However, this is generally because a lot of the products cooked within the confines of the kitchen are cooked at a temperature to flambe the food with some form of wine or alcoholic substance that will cause the pan to lightly burn. This obviously means that the pans have to be extremely strong and resilient.
The cookware used in these kitchens is cleaned on a regular basis as is required by the health and safety agency, but once something has been flambe in the pan it is extremely difficult to remove all the staining. A lot of these kitchens have specialised pans for each of these dishes, so it is only ever the same ingredients that go into the cookware and it clearly is not hazardous as these places wouldn't be offered Michelin star's if it was causing any health hazard to the clientele.
One thing that you do notice when watching other cooking programs like Come Dine With Me, is the comparative difference in the cookware. The individuals who take part in the program claim that they are all exceptional chefs, which is why they offer to host a dinner party so other guests can judge their culinary skills. But when the camera disappears into the kitchen to watch the cooking taking place, notice that all the pots and pans are spotlessly clean. I very much doubt that the manufacturers of cookware products have made better products for the general public than the professionals, what it suggests is that these individuals are taking shortcuts in their cooking, which is where the skill comes in.
Any old fool can follow a recipe that has been written down on a piece of paper, but the real skill is being able to read between the lines and perform the steps necessary to cook the produce to perfection.
