White wine is produced all over the world and enjoyed by millions of people. It can be delicious if paired with the right food but is equally good sipped by itself on a summer's day. White wine is as diverse as red and there are many different grapes grown to produce it all over the world, all with their own distinct flavours.

White wine is as diverse as red and there are many different grapes grown to produce it, all with their own distinct flavours.

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the most well-known white grapes and is grown all over the world. Both oaked and un-oaked varieties of this wine are produced, with the former being aged in oak barrels thus acquiring an oaky flavour, which doesn't appeal to everyone as it is quite distinctive.

Typical aromas from Chardonnay white wine are lemons, peaches, apples and tropical fruits, and it is relatively high in acids and very versatile as a paining for food. It tends to work well as a 'crowd pleaser' at events such as barbeques too.

Pinot Gris

Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio is produced extensively in both Italy and France, with the latter country producing the wine with the most character. French Pinot is riper, heavier and full of character. Pinot made in the US tends to be spicier, crisper and lighter than its European cousin.

Riesling

This white grape is native to Germany where it has been grown for viticulture for more than 600 years. The wine can range from very dry to very, very sweet and is highly acidic. Typical aromas from a young Riesling include those of limes, mint, peaches and honey.

Sauvignon Blanc

This grape is included in many of the great wines produced in France and aromas include gooseberries, asparagus and grassy notes. This grape is adaptable in the vineyard and popular the world over.

Chenin Blanc

Chenin Blanc is a relatively easy grape to grow and due to this it is produced in many countries around the world. The grape originates in the Loire region of France and is often blended with other grapes in Chablis, sparkling Californian wines as well as cheap table wines.

Gewurztraminer

This grape is very distinctive and would probably be easily flagged up in a blind taste test by many a wine-lover. It hails from the Alsace region of France and it is characterised by floral, fruity and spicy notes. This wine can be delicious to drink, but a little troublesome to pair with food unless you really know what you are doing.

This is a brief introduction to some of the many great white wines produced around the world. It's never been easier to sample the delights of world white wine now there are so many New World countries producing wines of an excellent standard, many of which are easily available in our supermarkets in the UK.
