Brewing a delicious cup of gourmet coffee is part science and part love. Anybody can make coffee; with all the brewers on the market, there's no real secret to making your basic cup. The love part comes in when you take the time to learn the nuances, understand the subtleties. The very act of making a cup of coffee becomes a delightful ritual, as you gently coax the flavor out of the delicious dark beans.
Granted, this kind of devotion is not for everyone. For many people, a cup of coffee is a cup of coffee. Loaded up with whiteners and sweeteners, the actual taste of coffee doesn't seem to matter a great deal to these folks. I'm not here to judge!
Take the time to understand a bit about the brewing process, and you may begin to view, and taste, your gourmet coffee in a whole new light. Treat those gourmet beans with the respect they deserve, and follow these tips for making outstanding coffee.
Gourmet Coffee: The Taste is in the Details
1. Splurge on the best gourmet beans you can find. Skimping on quality only leads to bitterness. A stale, poorly roasted bean will never brew into a good cup of coffee. Buy whole beans, and grind them as you need them to keep the flavor locked tight inside.
2. Buy a good grinder, or consider a brewing machine with a built-in grinding feature. Be sure you can adjust the grind setting for the type of flavor you prefer. Fine ground is best suited for high-intensity drinks like espresso.
3. Use cold, fresh water to brew your gourmet coffee. Consider using a filtering system, or buy bottled water. This will prevent the minerals from damaging your machine, and dampening the coffee's taste.
4. Don't let your coffee sit and stew. Make enough for your immediate needs, and then brew a second pot when you are ready. Ideally, you should drink your fresh brewed coffee within 15 or 20 minutes at the most.
Whether coffee is simply a requirement, or crosses the line into devotion, these four tips will enhance each and every cup.
