The way you go about storing wines can make or mar the longevity of the wine. Learn how to store it right.

Nothing evolves like wine and nothing is quite ageless like it. It can be a treasure trove of richness if you know how to nurture and store it. Various aspects play a role in changing the texture and taste of wine with time. Light, air, heat and related facets determine how wine should be stored. Keep reading to know a little bit about the methods.

It is quite an aberration that such a mystical thing actually requires routine treatment of storage to keep it in full flow. However, meeting things as they are, it is important to look for the right techniques to store them so that you can find them later, stamped with same quality.

Store them at dark places
As a first, you must fight shy of the desire to exhibit your maroon or dark red wine to visitors. It is because places open to visiting eyes are often those areas where heat and light keep fluctuating rapidly. This can be death-knell for the wines. They should ideally be stored in cool places, wine cellars or racks, where neither heat nor light reaches them until Judgment Day.

Some humidity is paramount
However, cool area for storage does not necessarily mean dry areas for storage. It is worthy noting that some amount of humidity is necessary for wines. In its absence, lifeblood is robbed out from the corks and they constrict in size. Naturally, jealous air from the vicinity enters the wine bottles in abundance and ruins the taste of the wine.

Go for nitrogen sealants
You can also use nitrogen sealants. Their scientific pedigree is unmatched. They run nitrogen at high pressure through the stored (generally leftover) wine and thus keep the oxygen from playing party spoiler. Once, oxygen is inhibited from readily mixing with the wine, its charisma is kept unblemished for the future rounds of drinks.

Check vibration
You must also check the kind of vibration your stored glass bottles go through. In essence, this means that you should not move the bottles all the while they are stored. Vibration disturbs the sediments settled at the bottom. Once, they start interfering with the crystal clear liquid, they bring disrepute to a vinery.

Look for the aging parameters
You must also know in depth about the aging table for wine. It is a nice thought to store wines and be fulfilled with the idea that you have a treasure hidden in the cellar, but storing wine past their prime can dull their drinking effect. For instance, you should consume Chardonnay within 5 years while keep your Merlots safely for a decade (provided it is the not the cheapest Merlot buy).

To sum it up
While storing wines in a cellar, you must stack them in a way that each bottle is able to be extracted without touching on the other one (sediment theory- remember). In case, you do not have a cellar, go for a quiet dark place in your home that does not have any heating equipment in the vicinity and is not excessively dry.
